Cal Opens Homestand Against Colorado

Cal returns to FTX Field at California Memorial Stadium to host Colorado Saturday afternoon. The game kicks off at 12:30 p.m. and will be televised by the Pac-12 Network.

This weekend marks the 11th game between the schools, with Cal holding a 6-4 series edge. The Golden Bears won the most recent matchup, 33-21, on Nov. 24, 2018, in Berkeley. Elijah Hicks (34 yards) and Ashtyn Davis (35 yards) both returned interceptions for touchdowns on Colorado's first two possessions, as Cal built a 21-0 first-quarter lead. The Bears are 4-0 vs. Colorado at home, with the other wins coming in 1968 (10-0), 2010 (52-7) and 2014 (59-56, 2OT).

This week mark's National Championship Week on campus, and the Bears' eight NCAA champions from the 2020-21 academic year will be honored during the game.

Cal will remain at home next weekend with the Bears hosting Oregon State at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30.

Close Losses
— Four of the five games Cal has lost in 2021 have been by seven points or less, including a 31-24 overtime defeat in its Pac-12 opener at Washington and a 24-17 loss at No. 9/10 Oregon. 

Garbers Picking Up the Pace at Quarterback
— Through the first six games this season, Chase Garbers is putting up some of the best numbers of his career. To date, he is 132-of-214 for 1,492 yards with nine touchdown passes.
— Garbers leads the Pac-12 in per game total offense (283.3 ypg), while he is second in passing yards per game (248.7 ypg) and third in completions (132).
— Garbers' passing yards per game are a career best, well ahead of his 196.9 ypg as a 2019 sophomore.
— Two of Garbers' four career 300-yard passing games have come in 2021 at Washington (319) and TCU (309).
— With a 7-yard rush for Cal's final TD at Washington, Garbers tied the school record for most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback with nine (also Brian Bedford and Dave Penhall). 
— Garbers has 929 yards rushing for his career and is now two yards shy of the school record for by a Cal quarterback (931, Joe Kapp). He has 211 yards and two touchdowns on the ground in 2021 on 54 carriers (all second on the team). 

Offense Producing Big Plays
— Garbers has 38 plays of 15+ yards in 2021 (31 passes, 7 rushes).
— Kekoa Crawford leads the team by being on the receiving end of nine plays of 15 or more yards from the line of scrimmage, followed by Jeremiah Hunter (8) and Trevon Clark (7). All three wide are among the Pac-12 leaders in yards per reception with Clark second (20.4), Hunter fourth (17.6) and Crawford seventh (15.3). Overall, Cal has 45 plays (14 rush, 31 pass) from the line of scrimmage of 15+ yards over five games including a season-high 13 vs. Sacramento State (8 rush, 5 pass).

Top-10 Takers
— Three Cal players - Marqez Bimage, Elijah Hicks and Daniel Scott - rank in the top-10 nationally in takeaway categories. Bimage's two fumble recoveries and 0.33 per game are tied for third nationally. Hicks' three forced fumbles are tied for fifth, while his 0.50 per game are tied for sixth. Scott's 0.50 interceptions per game are also tied for sixth, and his three total picks are tied for seventh.

National Championship Week
— Cal is celebrating its annual National Championship Week this week, with a variety of events to recognize the Golden Bears' title winners from 2020-21. These include a reception with Chancellor Christ on Monday and recognition during Saturday's football game. New banners honoring the champions are displayed outside Haas Pavilion.
— Cal won five individual and three relay NCAA titles last year - Ryan Hoffer, men's swimming (50-yard free, 100-yard free, 100-yard fly); Maya Bordas, women's gymnastics (uneven bars); Camryn Rogers, women's track & field (hammer throw); women's swimming - 200-yard free relay; men's swimming - 200-yard free relay and 400-yard free relay.
— In its history, Cal has won 97 national team titles in 16 different sports and 324 individual titles (includes individuals, relays, rowing boats and doubles teams).

Bears Getting More from Moore
— Damien Moore leads the Golden Bears rushing attack with 59.8 yards per game, including an average of 4.9 yards per rush. He has scored at least one touchdown in four games this season with a total of six to date (1 run vs. Nevada, 2 rush at TCU, 2 rush vs. Sac State, 1 reception at Washington).
— Moore's five rushing TDs all came in the first three games and were the most in the first three games of a season for Cal since Shane Vereen posted six rushing TDs in the first three games of the 2010 campaign.
— Moore's 26-yard TD catch at Washington was his first career TD reception.
— Moore has nearly twice has many rushing yards as he had last year (360 vs. 194) and he did not score a rushing TD before this season.

Goode Playing Much Better Than Good
— Cameron Goode has accumulated 16.5 tackles for loss and 10.0 quarterback sacks over his last 14 games.
— Goode had his 15th and 16th career sacks for a combined minus-27 yards at TCU. The 2.0 sacks tied a career high (also at UCLA in 2019). Goode added another tackle for loss, giving him 3.0 TFLs (-30 yards) for the game.
— Goode has 26 total tackles this season and tied for team honors with eight at Washington while his three quarterback hurries lead the team, 3.0 tackles for loss (-30 yards) are second and 2.0 sacks (-27 yards) third.

Long Plays Part of Cal Offense
— Cal had a combined seven completions of 30 yards or more in two games at TCU and vs. Sacramento State. The last time the Bears had that many in back-to-back games was in 2016 vs. Arizona State and Utah when Davis Webb was the Cal quarterback.
— Garbers' 68-yard pass to Trevon Clark at TCU was the longest career pass and catch for both players.
