Kikuchi Forges Way To ITA Super Regional Quarterfinals

Yuta Kikuchi won twice on Friday at super regionals.

SEATTLE – Cal men's tennis senior Yuta Kikuchi won twice on Friday at the ITA Northwest Super Regional Championships to advance to the singles quarterfinals at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. Golden Bear Philip Hjorth also won in the singles first round, but the senior lost in the round of 16 to the tournament's top seed.
 
In the opening round of 32, Kikuchi, seeded fifth and ranked 124th, defeated Oregon's Luke Vandecasteele, 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-0, and Hjorth topped Santa Clara's Guillaume Dalmasso, 6-3, 7-6(4).
 
Kikuchi followed with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Stanford's Max Basing in the next round, while Hjorth fell to Stanford's top-seeded and 48th-ranked Arthur Fery, 6-2, 6-1. Kikuchi will take on Gonzaga's Arthus de la Bassetière in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
 
In the doubles main draw, the fourth-seeded duo of Hjorth and Kikuchi lost to Gonzaga's Matthew Hollingworth and Sasha Trkulja, 8-3, in the opening round of 16.
 
The super regionals continue Saturday.
