Ly-Nguyen Advances to Third Round at ITA Northwest Regional

Oct 22, 2021

STANFORD, Calif. – Savanna Ly-Nguyen posted a pair of singles victories to lead Washington State during the first day of play at the 2021 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northwest Regional, Friday at the Taube Family Tennis Center.

On a day when morning rain forced the postponement of doubles to Saturday, Ly-Nguyen played two strong matches to advances to the third round Saturday. In the first round, the Cougar senior cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Gonzaga's Adrianna Sosnowska, setting up a second-round matchup against Washington's Nika Zupancic, the No. 16 seed. There, Ly-Nguyen needed a third-set tiebreaker to come away with a 6-4, 0-6, 7-6 (1) victory.

Cougar sophomore Fifa Kumhom captured her first-round match, easily defeating St. Mary's Stefanie Silva, 6-3, 6-1, but dropped a tight, three-set match to Oregon's Myah Petchey, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.

WSU freshman Maxine Murphy fell in her first-round match to St. Mary's Lene Hovda, 6-1, 6-1.

Play continues at the 2021 ITA Northwest Regional Saturday.
