Bears Advance At ITA Regionals

STANFORD, Calif. – California women's tennis freshman Jessica Alsola won twice in singles and, with junior Erin Richardson, twice in doubles on Saturday at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships at the Taube Family Tennis Center. The Cal pair of Hannah Viller Moeller and Makenna Thiel also won twice to advance to the doubles round of 16.
 
Alsola was one of three Golden Bears – including Julia Rosenqvist and Jada Bui – to win in Saturday's singles round of 32. The fourth-seeded Alsola then defeated Stanford's 10th-seeded Valencia Xu, 7-5, 6-2, to reach Sunday's quarterfinals. But Bui, seeded 13th, fell to Washington's top-seeded and 14th-ranked Vanessa Wong, 6-2, 6-1, and the seventh-seeded and 106th-ranked Rosenqvist lost to Washington's ninth-seeded and 124th-ranked Sarah-Maude Fortin, 6-4, 7-6(2), in the round of 16.
 
Alsola faces Stanford's sixth-seeded and 87th-ranked Angelica Blake in the quarters on Sunday at 11:15 a.m.
 
Also on Saturday, the third-seeded duo of Richardson and Alsola won its round of 64 opener and then beat Santa Clara's Finley Kalinic and JennaMarie Gordon, 6-1, in the round of 32. The Bears next play Stanford's Xu and Sara Choy in the round of 16 on Sunday at 10 a.m.
 
Viller Moeller and Thiel, seeded Nos. 5-8, will also play in the round of 16 on Sunday at 10 a.m. after winning twice on Saturday, including beating Washington State's Savanna Ly-Nguyen and Fifa Kumhom, 6-2, in the round of 32.
