Three Huskies Make Third Round At Regionals
STANFORD, Calif. – Outlasting the weather as much as their opponents, Huskies Vanessa Wong, Sarah-Maude Fortin, and Tara Chilton all won twice in the ITA Northwest Regionals main draw on Friday in a lengthy day one at Stanford's Taube Tennis Center. Rain caused severe delays to the schedule, but the three Dawgs all reached the round of 32 by night's end.
The No. 1 seed in the tournament, Wong got her first win of the season with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Giulia Hayer of Santa Clara. She then advanced again with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Arianna Capogrosso of USF.
No. 9 overall seed sophomore Sarah-Maude Fortin had a 7-5, 6-1 win in the first round over UC Davis' Claire Galerkin, and then followed that with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Alicia Yue of San Francisco in the second round.
Chilton toughed out a 7-6 (3), 6-4 first round match against San Francisco's Rita Colyer. Next, she knocked off Gonzaga's Caroline Wernli, 6-0, 2-6, 6-3.
Nika Zupancic, seeded No. 16, earned a 6-2, 6-4 win over Fresno State's Carolina Piferi, but in her next match she dropped a tough third-set tiebreaker to Savanna Ly-Nguyen of Washington State.
Zoey Weil fell in her opener, 6-3, 6-4, to Oregon's Sophie Luescher. Astrid Olsen came up short in her first match as a Dawg today, 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-4, against Sally Pathybridge of Portland. Hikaru Sato lost in straight sets to Gonza'a's Catherine Broerman, who is ranked 109th nationally and seeded eighth.
First round matches were also played in the invitational draw today, and Ashley Chang, Yolanda Lin, and Kelly Leung lost a total of one game between all three of them in their openers.
