Wong, Fortin Keep Moving At NW Regionals
STANFORD, Calif. – Vanessa Wong and Sarah-Maude Fortin both picked up two wins for the second-straight day to advance to the quarterfinals as the ITA Northwest Regionals hosted by Stanford continued to play catch-up schedule-wise thanks to inclement weather. Wong and Fortin both earned impressive wins over seeded opponents from Cal in the round of 16.
The Huskies also got a bracket win today, as freshman Kelly Leung and sophomore Yolanda Lin had two doubles wins to take the invitational doubles bracket. Leung also had two more wins in singles to move into the final of the invitational singles bracket.
In the main singles bracket, No. 1-seed Wong had a third round victory over Lara Marco Mas of San Jose State, 6-2, 6-1. In the round of 16, she faced her first seeded opponent, and dropped the first set before responding to defeat Cal's 13th-seeded Jada Bui, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Sarah-Maude Fortin had a 7-5, 6-2 win over Myah Petchey of Oregon in the third round, setting up a round of 16 match with 106th-ranked Julia Rosenqvist of Cal, the No. 7 seed. Fortin, seeded ninth, earned the minor upset with a 6-4, 7-6 (2) victory to join Wong in the quarters.
The other Husky alive in the main draw third round was Tara Chilton, but she came up short to the No. 3 seed, 57th-ranked Mariia Kozyreva of Saint Mary's, 6-0, 6-3.
Main draw doubles play also got rolling today at the Taube Tennis Center. Wong and Astrid Olsen, in their first matches as a duo, had consecutive 6-1 wins, over teams from Sacramento State and Fresno State, to make the doubles round of 16. Three more Husky duos had close first round losses.
Action will continue through Tuesday at Stanford.
