Cal Falls To No. 22 WSU

PULLMAN, Wash. – California volleyball fought in the third, but fell in straight sets, 17-25, 17-25, 20-25 to No. 22 Washington State on Sunday afternoon at Bohler Gym.  

Bella Bergmark recorded a match high 11 kills on .500 hitting for the Bears (7-14, 0-10 Pac-12).

Pia Timmer and Katy Ryan each had 10 kills for Washington State (13-7, 7-3 Pac-12). 

How It Happened:
Washington State used an early 5-0 run to go up 7-3, forcing a Cal timeout. The Bears answered out of the timeout, propelled by a block from Ellie Hamm and a Mima Mirkovic service ace to pull within 10-9. In a set of runs, WSU scored nine of the next 13 points leading to the second Bear timeout and a 19-13 advantage for the home team. Cal scored the next two points, but the Cougars went on to a 25-17 win in the frame.

The Cougs jumped out again in the second, going up 9-3 as the Bears used their first timeout of the set. WSU extended the lead to as much as 16-5 before Cal closed to 22-16 behind two straight kills from Leah Schmidt. Washington State scored three of the final four points for a 2-0 lead in the match.

Cal scored five straight in the third with kills from Bergmark and Schmidt along with a Tara DeSa service ace, tying the score at 17. Another finish from Schmidt made it 18-all until WSU scored five of the final six points to take the set 25-20 and the match, 3-0.

Up Next: The Bears travel to Tempe for a 7 p.m. first serve against Arizona State on Friday, Oct. 29 inside Wells Fargo Arena.
