Fun in the Rain
STANFORD, Calif. – Junior Maya Doms collected a brace, while fifth-year player Belle Briede added a goal and an assist, to guide No. 14 Stanford (12-3-1, 6-1-1 Pac-12) to a 4-0 shutout over Arizona (3-12-0, 0-8-0 Pac-12) on a rain-soaked Sunday afternoon from Cagan Stadium.
Doms bookended the four goals for the Cardinal, scoring in the 14th and 68th minutes. The multi-goal game is the second of Doms' career after recording a hat trick vs. CSUN on August 26 earlier this season.
The native of Davis, Calif. beat Arizona goalkeeper Hope Hisey with a shot to the lower left corner of the goal after receiving a pass from freshman Andrea Kitahata to get the scoring started. Doms then got on the end of a corner kick from Julia Leontini – one of nine corners from the Cardinal on Sunday – heading-home her 10th goal of the season to make it 4-0.
Briede made it 2-0 Stanford in the 28th minute, putting back a rebound off an initial shot from Abby Greubel. Greubel made a nice move to dribble past a defender before unleashing a left-footed shot that was turned away by Hisey. The rebound fell to the foot of Briede who powered it into the back of the net.
Briede set up the Cardinal's third goal of the match in the 39th minute, keeping a ball in at the end line before delivering a pass back to Jojo Harber who floated a shot over the outstretched arm of Hisey to the far corner of the net.
Stanford put up 25 total shots in the victory, including 19 in the opening stanza. Arizona managed just two shots on Sunday, with both coming in the final four minutes.
Cardinal goalkeeper Katie Meyer made one save in the win, eventually recording her fifth shutout of the season and 20th of her career. With 20 career clean sheets, Meyer now owns sole possession of eighth in Stanford history.
Hisey finished the match with 10 saves for the Wildcats.
Stanford will now prepare to visit No. 8 UCLA and No. 5 USC next week in Pac-12 play.
