Huskies And No. 5 Trojans Draw 2-2 On Senior Day

Oct 24, 2021

SEATTLE – Washington tied No. 5 USC 2-2, on a wet and rainy Senior Day at Husky Soccer Stadium. The Huskies (4-7-4, 2-3-3) twice came back from a one-goal deficit to earn the draw with the first-place Trojans (11-2-2, 6-0-2). Pre-match the Huskies honored their 13 academic seniors.

USC opened the scoring in the 30th minute on a goal by Croix Bethune, but UW quickly responded to equalize in the next two minutes. Kala McDaniel played a ball into the box that was flicked on by Summer Yates and Kyla Ferry calmy placed it away. The goal was Ferry's first of the season and her first as a Husky.

Olivia Sekany came up big in the first half, recording all five of her saves in the opening 45 minutes, to keep the scoreline level at the break.

USC once again took a lead in the 65th minute when Bethune found the back of the net for her second goal of the day. However, UW showed no quit yet again, quickly responding to tie the contest at 2-2 in the 68th minute.

This time McKenzie Weinert was the one to equalize, after running onto a beautiful pass from Yates and Weinert powerfully blasted it past the keeper. Weinert's goal was her second of the fall.

Yates assisted on both Husky goals in the match, for her 11th point of the season and the 53rd of her career, which puts her in a tie for ninth place in program history. Yates lead the way with five shots in the match, three on target.

The weather played a significant role late into the second half, as both teams managed the difficult conditions, and no result could be decided after 90 minutes of play.

The Huskies headed to overtime for the fifth time this season. Both teams managed a few good opportunities in the two overtime periods, but could not find a winner, and the match was settled at a 2-2 draw.

Ruby Hellstrom had three shots on the day, with one on target.

UW is back in action next week at the Oregon schools, facing Oregon State at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday and against Oregon at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
