Kikuchi Falls In Super Regional Semis

Oct 24, 2021

SEATTLE – The California men's tennis campaign at the ITA Northwest Super Regional Championships came to an end on Sunday, when Golden Bear senior Yuta Kikuchi lost in the singles semifinals at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.

Kikuchi, seeded fifth and ranked 124th, fell to Stanford's top-seeded and 48th-ranked Arthur Fery in a close match, 7-5, 7-5.

The Cal veteran had also competed in doubles at super regionals, with Cal's fourth-seeded Kikuchi and Philip Hjorth exiting in the round of 16. Additionally, Hjorth played in singles in Seattle, but he fell to Fery in the second round.

"Philip and Yuta did a great job representing the team in singles and doubles at the super regional event," said Amanda Augustus, Cal's Interim Director of Tennis. "This event, played in two parts, allowed Philip to continue to improve his singles ranking as he has won a ton of matches to continue his impressive fall.

"Yuta making the semifinals shows how he is rounding into top form this fall as a top national player. These two hard workers and team leaders will help propel the group over the rest of the semester to be fit and in form for January."
