STANFORD, Calif. – California women's tennis freshman Jessica Alsola won in singles on Monday at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships to advance to Tuesday's semifinals. But the first-year Golden Bear also lost in a semifinal – in doubles – at the Taube Family Tennis Center on the penultimate day of the tournament.
Alsola, the fourth seed in singles, defeated Stanford's sixth-seeded and 87th-ranked Angelica Blake, 1-6, 6-2, 6-0.
In doubles, the third-seeded pair of Alsola and Erin Richardson beat Yana Gurevich and Arianna Stavropoulos of UC Davis, 8-4, in Monday's quarterfinals. But in the semifinals, the Bears fell to the Cardinal's top-seeded Blake and Connie Ma, 8-7(7).
Alsola will next face Stanford's fifth-seeded Alexandra Yepifanova in the singles semis at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, the final day of ITA regionals.
