2022 Gym Devil Schedule Released

Oct 26, 2021

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Sun Devil Gymnastics has announced the 2022 schedule, which will have five home meets and nine opponents who made it to the 2021 NCAA National Championships, including the defending national champions Michigan.

"Jess and I are very excited for the upcoming 2022 season," Co-head coach Jay Santos sad. "We have put together a schedule with some of the premier programs in NCAA Gymnastics. We have multiple highlights in our out of conference opponents opening up with Kentucky at home and then going to Michigan, the defending national champions in Ann Arbor. We also will face the NCAA runner up from 2021 Oklahoma in a tri-meet with Boise State. As always, the Pac-12 conference still boasts some of the toughest teams in the country and this year will be no different, with UCLA, Cal and Washington all coming to Tempe this season. This is a very challenging schedule but this Sun Devil squad is hungry to show everyone that they are up for the challenge and it will be exciting to watch!"

The 2022 schedule looks to be an exciting challenge for the Gym Devils, who had a historic season last year. They made it to the NCAA Regional Finals for the first time and ended the season ranked No. 9. Led by All-American junior Hannah Scharf, the Gym Devils return all but two athletes, including a strong sophomore class that stepped in to contribute high scores and event titles last season. ASU also added two freshmen, Mallory Marcheli and Alex Theodorou, that will make an immediate impact to fill the three routines lost in the lineup.

Before the first meet, fans can get their first glimpse of the 2022 squad at the Maroon and Gold Meet on December 17 at 7 p.m. MST in Desert Financial Arena.

The season will kick off with the first of four non-conference meets against Kentucky, starting off at home on January 5. Last season the Wildcats advanced to the NCAA Regional Finals and finished the season ranked No.14 on Road to Nationals.

The Gym Devils will then travel to Anaheim on January 8 to compete in the Collegiate Challenge which will feature the Pac-12 schools. The Gym Devils will compete in the first session against Washington, who ASU defeated last season in Seattle for the first time since 2010.

The final non-conference meet before Pac-12 play will be in Ann Arbor to take on the 2021 National Champions Michigan on January 15. At nationals in 2021, Scharf rotated with the Wolverines as an individual.

Pac-12 play begins on January 21 when ASU will head to Salt Lake City to take on the 2021 Pac-12 Champion and the NCAA third-place finishers Utah, whose 2022 roster features multiple Olympians. The Gym Devils will then return to Desert Financial Arena and face Washington on January 28.

ASU will then head back on the road for two meets. First, Arizona State will head to Oregon State on February 5, another squad with an Olympian on the team. ASU beat Oregon State at home last year for the first time since 2006. Then, ASU will head down south to take on rivals Arizona, who the Gym Devils beat twice last season to bring the streak to six consecutive victories over the Wildcats.

The Gym Devils will then return to Desert Financial Arena for two-straight home meets, hosting UCLA on February 20 and Cal on February 27, both of whom were 2021 National Championship qualifiers. The Bruins are a third Pac-12 team with at least one Tokyo Olympian on the roster. Finally, ASU will travel to Stanford to wrap up Pac-12 play on March 4.

The last meet before the postseason begins will be a tri-meet at Desert Financial Arena featuring ASU, Oklahoma and Boise State. Oklahoma finished second at the 2021 NCAA Champions and defeated ASU in Norman in the 2021 season opener. The Gym Devils defeated Boise State last year in the second round of the NCAA Championships to advance to the Regional Final.

The postseason will begin with the 2022 Pac-12 Gymnastics Championships on March 19.
