Men's Tennis Posts Strong Showings at ITA Regionals
MALIBU, Calif. – Eleven members of the UCLA men's tennis team were in action – and five posted quarterfinal-round showings – at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships on the campus of Pepperdine University.
The Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center provided the setting for the singles and doubles competitions, which stretched over three days. A singles champion will be crowned Tuesday.
Giacomo Revelli and Patrick Zahraj were the top-performing Bruins, advancing to the final round of the doubles draw in their first appearance as a partnership. Alexander Hoogmartens and Stefan Leustian reached the singles quarterfinals. Drew Baird, Jeffrey Fradkin, Eric Hahn, Blaine Hovenier, Karl Lee, Timothy Li and Max Wild also logged results.
Fradkin and Revelli made their debuts at the college level, with each prevailing in his first singles and doubles matches. Fradkin defeated Daniel Traxler of UC San Diego, 2-6, 6-1, 6-1, while Revelli bested Mike Mkrtchian of UC Irvine, 6-0, 7-5. Fradkin and Lee took down Sahm Irvine and Tristan Taylor of UC San Diego, 8-0, and Revelli/Zahraj topped Gianluca Brunkow and Pablo Masjuan of UC Santa Barbara, 8-5. Revelli and Zahraj would go on to beat Corrado Summaria/Tim Zeitvogel of Pepperdine (8-5) and Bradley Frye/Peter Makk of USC (6-2, retired) en route to the championship match.
Hoogmartens and Leustian turned in singles wins versus ranked Pepperdine counterparts, taking down No. 117 Daniel De Jonge and No. 125 Zeitvogel, respectively. Following his previous appearance at the ITA All-American Championships, Leustian leads UCLA in singles wins, with six.
Next up for the Bruins is a trip across town to take part in the Southern California Intercollegiate Tennis Championships. David X. Marks Tennis Stadium on the campus of USC will host the matches, which will feature four Bruins. Singles and doubles qualifying matches are scheduled for Thursday. The 32-player singles main draw starts Friday, as does the 16-pair doubles tournament. Play concludes Sunday.
