James, Watts Named CU Athletes of the Week, Presented By Arrow

Oct 28, 2021

Soccer's Shyra James and football's Josh Watts were named this week's CU Athletes of the Week presented by Arrow.

In the last soccer home game of the season against Oregon State on Sunday, James scored two goals to lead the Buffs to a 3-2 overtime victory. Her first goal came in the 53rd minute to quickly get the lead back for CU at 2-1. Then in overtime, James headed the ball into the goal to give the Buffs the win. This was the first time a CU player scored two or more goals in a game since Taylor Kornieck on September 27, 2019. James is currently tied with Shanade Hopcroft for the team lead with six goals on the season.

Watts had another big game for the Buffs this past weekend against California. He punted seven times for a 48.9 average, with two inside-the-20 and four kicks that went 50-plus yards. He now has six consecutive games where he has averaged over 47 yards. This matches John Torp's run of six in a row in 2004. On the season he has 42 punts with an average of 48.71 which ranks first in the Pac-12 and sixth in the nation.

Soccer will hit the road for their final three games of the season. The next two games will be in Arizona starting with a matchup against Arizona State on Thursday at 6 p.m.MT and one against Arizona on Sunday. Football will also hit the road this weekend and take on the No. 7 Oregon Ducks in Eugene, Ore. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m.
