Oct 29, 2021

TEMPE, Ariz. – California volleyball dropped a 15-25, 18-25, 17-25 straight set decision to Arizona State on Friday night at Desert Financial Arena.

Leah Schmidt recorded a team high nine kills for the Bears (7-15, 0-11 Pac-12). Bella Bergmark had six kills on .385 hitting for Cal.

Geli Cyr had a match best 14 kills for Arizona State (12-10, 5-6 Pac-12).

Cal out-blocked ASU 6-4 on the night.

How It Happened:
Arizona State used a hot start offensively to jump out 15-7 before a Devil hitting error and Kendall Jensen service ace made it a six-point advantage. ASU scored five of the next seven to go up 20-11 and put the set away from there as Schmidt recorded three first frame kills.

Darian Clark had an outstanding service run in her hometown, putting down four straight aces as part of a 7-0 Cal run to take an 8-7 advantage starting the second. The home team had an answer, scoring 13 of the next 17 points to build an eight-point lead and went on to take the set, hitting .460 as a team.

Sam Taumoepeau dropped a kill inside the backline to tie the score at five-all in the third. Leading 7-6, the Sun Devils scored the next eight points to pull away in the set on the way to the 3-0 win in the match.

Up Next: The Bears travel south to Tucson for a 12 noon first serve against Arizona on Sunday, Oct. 31 inside the McKale Center.
