Wildcats Down No. 15 Stanford in Three
TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona defeated No. 15 Stanford in straight sets on Friday night in McKale for the team's first win over a ranked opponent this season. Sofia Maldonado Diaz and Puk Stubbe were unstoppable for the Cats with 15 and 12 kills, respectively. This marks the first time Arizona has beat Stanford three home matches in a row in program history.
Set 1 | Arizona - 25, Stanford - 19
The Wildcats came out strong, hitting .375 to win Set 1. Maldonado Diaz led the attack with 6 kills and also tallied an ace. Jaelyn Hodge followed with five kills, hitting .500. Emery Herman directed the offense with 12 assists. In addition, Herman recorded two kills and a block assist in the first set.
Set 2 | Arizona - 25, Stanford - 14
Arizona's defense shined in the second set, holding Stanford to just five kills to win 25-14. Hodge led the defense with two block solos. Zyonna Fellows and Puk Stubbe combined for back-to-back block assists. Maldonado Diaz matched Stanford's offense with five kills of her own. Merle Weidt hit perfectly in the second set, knocking down four kills to keep the Wildcats' offense going strong.
Set 3 | Arizona - 25, Stanford - 23
The Cats won the final set 25-23, once again out-hitting the Cardinal. Stubbe found her rhythm in the third set with eight kills and Maldonado Diaz recorded four kills for Arizona. Fellows and Hodge blocked one of Stanford's attempts for their third block assist of the match. Herman had 12 assists to help the Wildcats defeat their first ranked opponent of the season.
