Oct 31, 2021

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State volleyball lost to No. 19-ranked Utah in a hard-fought 3-1 match (22-25, 25-20, 23-25, 14-25) inside Gill Coliseum on Sunday, Oct. 31. The Beavers fall to 3-19 overall and 1-11 in Pac-12 play while the Utes (15-6, 8-4 Pac-12) are now winners of their last three matches.

Senior Maddie Goings collected her second double-double of the year with 18 kills, two shy of a season-best, and 10 digs while junior Lindsey Schell chipped in 15 kills, just two shy of a career-high. Freshman Vivian Light was the last Beaver with double-digit kills, adding 11 which is the Sloughhouse, Calif. native's third straight game in double-figures.

Freshman Izzi Szulczewski nearly missed out on a career-high with 51 assists, missing the mark by two against her nationally-ranked opponents. Defensively, freshman Madison Kelly led the Beavers at the net with a career-high five blocks while Szulczewski added three, respectively. After becoming the all-time digs record holder on Friday evening, senior Grace Massey grabbed a team-high 11 digs on the day.

Schell got OSU going in the first after racking back-to-back kills, helping the Beavers pull within two, 14-12. The nationally-ranked Utes would respond to take a 19-13 advantage late in the set off a 6-1 run. The Beavers produced a 6-3 surge of their own, pulling within two at 23-21 but a pair of kills sealed set one for Utah.

In the second frame, the Beavers attacked at their best with 21 kills off 36 attempts and just three errors to even the match. OSU held the early lead, 8-6, until Utah rallied six of the next eight, flipping the switch at 13-11. Kills from Light and Szulczewski sparked a late 7-0 Beaver rally to win the 25-20 frame.

The Beavers assumed a 9-6 lead to start game three, but another surge from nationally-ranked Utah put the Utes up 12-11. No. 19 Utah claimed the 25-23 nail-biting set after producing a late 5-1 rally down the stretch.

The fourth and final set was all Utah, leading from the very beginning and jumping out to a 6-2 advantage. The match was sealed by four straight Ute kills.

As a team, the Beavers attacked at a .321 rate while the Utes used a .353 hitting percentage in four sets. Utah held the slight advantage in kills, 64-61, aces, 5-2, and blocks, 10-9, while OSU won the battles in assists, 60-58, and digs 47-43.

The Beavers return to the road this upcoming weekend, travelling to California on Friday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. before finishing up at No. 15 Stanford on Sunday, Nov. 7 at noon.  Both matches will be live streamed via the home team institutions.
