USC Beach Volleyball Wins Three at Collegiate Fall Challenge
SANTA MONICA, Calif. – The defending NCAA champion USC beach volleyball team saw its first action since claiming the program's fourth national title with three dual victories at the Collegiate Fall Challenge on Saturday, Oct. 30.
The Women of Troy--pooled with Long Beach State, Loyola Marymount, and California--claimed three wins to win the pool and went 13-2 overall in individual matches.
USC employed different lineups and pairings in each of the three duals and opened the day with a 5-0 win over the Golden Bears. The Trojans got straight-set wins in all but one match with Cal. Next, USC took down LBSU by a 4-1 count. Three matches went three sets with the 49ers for the longest dual of the day. USC concluded the day with a 4-1 win over LMU to win its pool. Long Beach State (2-1) finished second to the Trojans, while LMU went 1-2 for third place and Cal took fourth with an 0-3 record.
In the other pool, UCLA went 3-0. Stanford finished second (2-1) followed by Pepperdine in third (1-2) and Cal Poly in fourth (0-3).
The single-day tournament hosted by BVNE (Beach Volleyball National Events) was the first fall event for several of the teams in attendance including the Women of Troy and showcased the top eight collegiate squads on the West Coast.
USC captured the program's fourth national championship (third NCAA crown) with a win over crosstown rival UCLA in the 2021 NCAA Championship dual. Under second-year head coach Dain Blanton, USC went 30-4 and had winning streaks of 13 and 12 matches during the season. The Trojans finished as the Pac-12 runner-up and produced the league's Pair of the Year in Tina Graudina and Megan Kraft. Graudina was also named Pac-12 Player of the Year and Kraft was the conference's Freshman of the Year. Both were named first-team AVCA All-Americans and were joined on the first team by Julia Scoles and Sammy Slater.
