Katherine Muzi Career Best 68 Leads USC Women's Golf In Pac-12 Preview First Round
Senior Katherine Muzi fired a career-best 5-under 68 while freshman Xin (Cindy) Kou carded a 3-under 70 to lead the No. 22 USC women's golf team to within a shot of the lead after the first round of the Pac-12 Preview at the Nanea G.C. in Kailua Kona, Hawaii, on Monday (Nov. 1).
USC, which won the tournament in the fall of 2013, combined for a 2-under 290, one back of top-ranked Stanford and one ahead of a two-way tie for third, three better than a two-way tie for fifth.
Muzi, coming off of a career-best 10th-place effort at the Stanford Intercollegiate, kept up her strong play with both her lowest score (68) and most under par (-5) in a round to take the 18-hole lead. It was her fourth round under par this season and fifth of par or better.
Starting on the second hole in the shotgun start, Muzi opened with a birdie en route to a -3 first nine. She was still 3-under before birdies on 17 and 18 and closed with a par on 1.
Kou, tied for third, almost kept pace with her 70. It marked her sixth round under par in 10 outings this season and her seventh of par or better. She was 2-under going out and penciled in eight straight pars before finishing with a birdie on 18.
Sophomore Brianna Navarrosa is tied for 28th after her 2-over 75 during a round in which she closed the final seven holes at 7-under.
Sophomores Christine Wang and Michaela Morard are tied for 38th at 4-over.
