KAILUA KONA, Hawaii – Junior Emma Spitz leads No. 12 UCLA women's golf in the Top 10 with a 1-under 72 finish in round one of the Nanea Pac-12 Preview at Nanea Golf Club. Collectively, the Bruins are in ninth place at 9-over 301, 13 strokes behind the leader No. 1 Stanford.
Spitz, tied for ninth on the individual leaderboard, birdied four times in round one on the par-4 2nd, par-3 8th, par-4 10th and par-5 18th. Spitz' performance marked her third under-par showing of the season and third in a row dating back to the Stanford Intercollegiate on Oct. 15-17.
USC's Katherine Muzi owns a one-stroke lead for first place in the field of 60 golfers at 5-under 68.
Freshman Zoe Antoinette Campos is the second Bruin scorer at 2-over 75, tied for 27th. Campos birdied three consecutive holes on the front nine: the par-5 4th, par-4 5th and par-5 6th.
Freshman Caroline Canales – who paced UCLA at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate in its season opener on Sept. 13-15 – finished round one tied for 38th at 4-over 77. Canales birdied three times on the par-5 4th, par-4 5th and par-4 10th.
Junior Emilie Paltrinieri rounded out the scorers for UCLA also tied for 38th at 4-over 77. Paltrinieri birdied twice on the par-5 6th and par-5 18th. Junior Annabel Wilson was the Bruins' fifth-place finisher at 5-over 78 with two birdies on the par-5 6th and par-4 9th.
