No. 2 Beavers Challenge San Diego State, UCLA
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State men's soccer team hits the road for a final time during the regular season as it travels to San Diego, Cailf. to clash with San Diego State on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Los Angeles, Calif. to battle UCLA on Sunday at 1 p.m. Thursday's game will be accessible to watch via live stream and Sunday's match will be broadcasted on the Pac-12 Networks.
The Beavers are 11-1-2 (6-0-1 Pac-12) and remain the top team in the Pac-12 standings. Oregon State is ranked No. 1 in the Top Drawer Soccer rankings and No. 2 in this week's United Soccer Coaches rankings. For the second week in a row, OSU sits at No. 1 in the NCAA Men's Soccer RPI.
Last Time Out
No. 3 Oregon State played host to Stanford on Oct. 28, shutting out the Cardinal, 1-0. Redshirt senior Tyrone Mondi scored his eighth goal of the season and the sole goal of the match off his right foot with an assist from sophomore Mouhameth Thiam.
On Oct. 31, the Beavers posted their second shutout in a row and seventh of the season with a 2-0 victory over California. Thiam found the net in the 30th minute off redshirt sophomore Carlos Moliner's cross. In the 49th minute, redshirt senior Tsiki Ntsabeleng scored with a touch off his left foot, unassisted. Junior Adrian Fernandez earned his 21st career solo shutout and posted four saves, including a save on a penalty kick.
Fernandez was named Pac-12 Player of the Week on Nov. 1 for his performances in goal against the Cardinal and Golden Bears.
Last Time Against San Diego State
The Beavers hosted SDSU on Oct. 3, shutting out the No. 13 ranked Aztecs, 2-0, at Lorenz Field. Graduate student Adrian Molina-Diaz scored in the 18th minute, assisted by sophomore Javier Armas and freshman Joran Gerbet. Moliner posted the Beavers' second goal in the 24th minute with assists from freshman Jibril Rodet and junior Sofiane Djeffal. OSU's all-time record with SDSU is 20-11-3.
Scouting San Diego State
San Diego State is 8-4-2 (2-4-0 Pac-12). After falling to OSU on Oct. 3, the Aztecs dropped contests to UCLA (Oct. 8) and Stanford (Oct. 21). SDSU posted a 2-1 victory over San Diego (Oct. 15) and is coming off a 3-1 win over non-conference contender San Diego Christian (Oct. 27).
Sophomore Andre Ochoa is SDSU's leading scorer with five goals and one game-winner. Sophomore Iñigo Villaldea leads the team in assists with four. Between the pipes, sophomore Jacob Castro has clocked 1276:57 minutes and has tallied 52 saves, allowing 10 goals. The Aztecs have scored 15 goals compared to 11 scored by opponents.
SDSU went 1-7-2 (1-7-2 Pac-12) in the spring.
Last Time Against UCLA
The Beavers hosted UCLA on Sept. 30, edging past the No. 23 ranked Bruins, 4-3. Molina-Diaz scored in the 22nd minute of play with assists from junior Adrian Crespo and Rodet. OSU scored three goals within three minutes to overcome a 3-1 deficit midway through the second half. Mondi, Molina-Diaz, and Djeffal found the net in the 64th, 66th, and 67th minutes of play, respectively, to edge past UCLA, 4-3. The Beavers' all-time record with the Bruins is 10-35-3.
UCLA is 8-5-1 (3-3-1 Pac-12). After meeting with the Beavers on Sept. 30, the Bruins fell to Washington, 2-1, on Oct. 3. UCLA bounced back, posting home victories over San Diego (Oct. 8) and Loyola Marymount (Oct. 14), before falling to California (Oct. 21). The Bruins are coming off a 1-1 draw at Stanford (Oct. 24) and will face Washington on Nov. 4, prior to hosting Oregon State.
Redshirt freshman Tucker Lepley, senior Kevin Diaz, and sophomore Tommy Silva are tied for top scorer with four goals each. Three of Silva's goals are game-winners, while Diaz and Lepley each have one. Lepley leads the team in assists with four. In goal, senior Justin Garces has clocked 1160:49 minutes, earning 35 saves and allowing 15 goals. UCLA has posted 23 goals compared to 16 scored by opponents.
The Bruins went 3-7-2 (2-6-2 Pac-12) in the spring.
