Bears Suffocate Saint Martin’s, Win 79-32
BERKELEY – The Cal women's basketball team put on a defensive display in their final exhibition game of the season. The Bears forced 34 turnovers and held Saint Martin's to 27 percent shooting as Cal went on to win 79-32 on Thursday night at Haas Pavilion.
Sophomore forward Dalayah Daniels got the Bears offense going, scoring six of Cal's eight first quarter points. The native of Seattle finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds in 26 minutes of action coming off the bench. Daniels was 6-for-11 from the field and an impressive 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
Cal opened the contest ice cold from the field, connecting on just one shot in their first 10 attempts. However, they were brilliant from the free throw line where the shot 85.7 percent, going 18-for-21. For the night, the Bears connected on 45.3 percent of their attempts going 29-for-64.
The second half was once again the difference. Cal shot 55.6 percent after the intermission, connecting on 20 of 36 attempts from the field. Freshman guard Jayda Curry was the catalyst for the offensive boost, scoring 14 of her game-high 20 after the break.
Saint Martin's finished the night 13-for-48 from the field, they were just 4-for-23 from the floor in the opening half. Guard Lauren Morris led the Warriors with 10 points. The Bear's did a tremendous job on Saint Martin's top returning player, Claire Dingus, who was held to just four points on 1-for-12 shooting.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After scoring the game's first basket, Saint Martins was held scoreless over the final seven and a half minutes of the opening quarter. Daniels, Curry, and fast break layups off turnovers got the Bears offense in gear, finishing the half on a 12-1 run to go into the locker room leading 30-9.
Late in the second half, after a field goal in the paint by Saint Martin's Emily Nelson, Cal went on a 19-0 run in the fourth quarter to give the Bears their largest lead of the night, up 47 with under a minute to play.
Cal returns to action on Tuesday night when Sacramento State comes to Haas Pavilion for the official 2021-22 opener. The Bears and Hornets will tip off at 7:00 p.m. The game will be streamed on the Cal Live Stream. Tickets can be purchased at CalBears.com.
