TEMPE, Ariz. – The UCLA swim and dive team suffered a 173-121 loss to Arizona State on Friday afternoon at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.

The result represented the first loss of the year for the Bruins (2-1, 1-1 Pac-12) who previously picked up dual meet wins over UC Santa Barbara and Washington State.

UCLA received individual event wins from junior Sophia Kosturos (100 back) and senior Ella Kirschke (200 IM) on Friday. Kosturos notched a season-best time in her event to take home the win, while Kirschke was the first-place finisher in the 200 IM for the second time in as many dual meets this fall.

Kirschke was also the runner-up finisher in the 200 freestyle, the lone Bruin to log multiple top-two individual finishes.

Kosturos (55.25) led a strong UCLA performance in the 100 back, as freshman Mia Chang (55.85) and junior Katrina Sommer (56.72) placed 3-4 to give the Bruins 14 points – the squad's most in an individual swim event all day.

UCLA finished 2-3-4 in the 100 breast, led by Eva Carlson's runner-up time of 1:02.91. The Bruins also went 2-3-4 in the 200 back (Abriana Howard was runner-up at 2:02.99).

The team returns to action on Saturday afternoon, heading to Tucson to face Arizona in a 12:00 p.m. PT dual meet.
