SEATTLE – A split Husky squad had great results to open up a big weekend of action at the Jack Kramer Invitational and the Gonzaga Invitational. Down in Southern California, the Huskies went 8-0 in singles play to put three players into the quarterfinals, and over in Spokane, five more Dawgs made their respective singles quarterfinals.
Jack Kramer Invitational
Making a return to the Jack Kramer Club, four Huskies fought hard for a combined eight singles wins, with four of those coming in three sets.
Third-seeded Vanessa Wong had consecutive three set wins to reach the quarters. She first defeated Arizona's Midori Castillo, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5, and then pulled away in another third set against Fresno State's Yinglak Jittakoat, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
Astrid Olsen, the No. 5 seed, was the only Husky not to go long today. She had a 6-4, 6-1 win over USC's Gabrielle Lee in round one, and then beat Cal State Fullerton's Natalie Duffy, 6-1, 6-2 in the round of 16.
Nika Zupancic capped the night with a big win over the No. 4-seed, Kimmi Hance of UCLA, coming back from down a set to win, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4. Zupancic also went three sets earlier in the day, beating Kimberley Bhunu of Cal Poly, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.
Sophomore Sarah-Maude Fortin had a 6-3, 6-3 win in the first round over a Fresno State player, and then went past Vanesa Nikolovova of LMU, 6-2, 6-1.
The quarterfinal matches will put four Huskies against four Pepperdine Waves. Pepperdine reached the NCAA team final last spring.
Gonzaga Invitational
Six Huskies got into the swing of things in Spokane taking on teams from around the Northwest at Gonzaga's Stevens Center.
Spread around three different singles draws, five Dawgs advanced to their respective singles quarterfinals.
Kelly Leung had a bye in the Blue Draw, where Hikaru Sato was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Hana Cho of Idaho State.
In the Purple Draw, Zoey Weil and Tara Chilton were both straight-set victors. Yolanda Lin got a 6-4, 6-3 win in the Red Draw over Andrea Redondo of Idaho. Ashley Chang lost a close 7-6, 6-4 match in her opener against a Portland opponent.
In doubles, Chang and Lin teamed for a 6-4 win over Ljubas/Mulville from Oregon, and Sato/Chilton were 6-2 winners in their quarterfinal match in the Blue Draw.
