Colorado Closes Out Fall Season
BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. – Colorado women's tennis team concluded the 2021 fall season at the Bonita Bay Classic this weekend, defeating Notre Dame in an exhibition dual and picking up eight singles wins along the way.
The Buffaloes were led by Mila Stanojevic who extended her singles win streak to eight-straight matches after picking up a win in each of the three dual exhibitions. She defeated Notre Dame's Carrie Beckman 8-2 as the team had to rush to finish up with rain in the forecast and played a single prostyle set to determine the matches. She followed it up with a win against Ida Ferding of host school Florida Gulf Coast 6-4, 6-4. Her final match of the weekend came against Juana Larranaga of Purdue where she fell in the first set 6-2 but won a decisive second set 7-6(5) before winning the tiebreaker set 1-0(8).
Stanojevic finished the fall season with a team-best 11-4 record in singles play and also led the team with an 8-6 doubles record.
Caroline Pozo also had a strong showing this weekend going 2-1 in singles play with wins against Notre Dame's Nibediata Ghosh 8-4 and Isabella Colmenares of FGCU 7-5, 6-3. She and Antonia Balzert also picked up a key doubles win against Notre Dame to win the doubles point and ultimately the match. The other doubles win against Notre Dame came from Betina Tokac and Stanojevic, which ended up being the only two doubles matches that the team won this weekend with a weekend record of 2-7 in doubles action.
Balzert, Tokac and Ellen Puzak all picked up a win this weekend as well. Balzert's win came against Notre Dame's Yashna Yellayi 8-6 before she fell 6-2, 6-2 in the FGCU dual and lost a close match against Purdue 4-6, 7-6(5), 1-0(8). Tokac and Puzak each picked up singles wins in the final day against Purdue as Tokac defeated Rut Galindo of Purdue 7-6(3), 6-0 and Puzak defeated Seira Shimizu 6-2, 7-5.
The Buffaloes finished the fall season 47-49 (.490) in singles play with six of nine players finishing with a singles record of .500 or better. The team finished 18-28 (.391) using 17 different player combinations in doubles play led by the duo of Puzak and Tokac with four wins.
Colorado opens the spring dual season Jan. 22 against Oral Roberts on the road. The first home dual comes Feb. 4 against Houston.
