Cantafio Tied for 21st after One Round at Poppy Hills

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Sophomore Jaden Cantafio carded 1-under, 70 in the first round of the 2021 Saint Mary's Invitational Monday, Nov.  8, as he ended his day at the Poppy Hills Golf Club in a tie for 21st on the player leaderboard.

Cantafio collected five birdies through his first 18 holes of play at Pebble Beach. The highlight of the day for the sophomore came on holes 9 and 10, as Cantafio collected back-to-back birdies on the par-5 holes. The Tustin, California native will begin Tuesday's second round in a tie for 21st.

As a team, Washington State carded 11-over, 295 to end the first day of the Saint Mary's Invitational in a tie for 17th with Seattle U.

Sophomore Preston Bebich opened the tournament by collecting four birdies on the front nine and ended his day a tie for 66th after shooting 3-over, 74. Redshirt senior Max Sekulic wrapped up the first round at 4-over, 75, as he will open the second round in a tie for 75th. Junior Pono Yanagi will open the second round 10 slots behind Sekulic on the player leaderboard after carding 5-over, 76 in the first round. Freshman Peter Jung concluded the opening round of the Saint Mary's Invitational for WSU by shooting 7-over, 78.

Stanford heads into Tuesday's second round at the Saint Mary's Invitational with an 8-stroke lead over San Francisco, as the Cardinal shot 269 (-15) in the first round. Oregon's Craig Ronne and Santa Clara's Jack Avrit are tied atop the player leaderboard, as each golfer carded 7-under par, 64 in the first round.

The second round of the Saint Mary's Invitational will get underway this Tuesday, Nov. 9. WSU's tee time is set for 9:32 a.m. PT from the Poppy Hills Golf Club.
