PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – Oregon shot the lowest round of the day, an 8-under 276, to climb to second place after the second round of the Saint Mary's Invitational, played Tuesday at the par-71, 7,002-yard Poppy Hills Golf Club.
The Ducks trail No. 6 Stanford by seven strokes heading into Wednesday's final round.
"Our goal was to get in the final round with Stanford," said assistant coach Jeff Quinney. "The guys did that today with a great team effort so we are within striking distance."
How It Happened: Nate Stember shot his lowest round of the fall while Oven Avrit bounced back from a rough first round Monday to lead the Ducks on Tuesday.
Stember followed Monday's 1-under 70 with a 3-under 68 that left him tied for fifth for the tournament at 4-under. He is three strokes out of the lead held by Nevada's Quim Vidal Mora.
Avrit raced up the leaderboard with a 5-under 66 to leap from 93rd to a tie for 30th. Avrit had six birdies and just one bogey on Tuesday.
The Ducks also counted a 2-under 69 from Greg Solhaug. He was tied for 15th overall at 1-under 141.
Notable: Of Avrit's 11 rounds played this fall, six have been under par.
