Bears Head To Sacramento For NCAA West Regionals

Nov 10, 2021

BERKELEY – The Golden Bear cross country teams continue championship season this Friday, Nov. 12 at the NCAA West Regionals. The women's 6,000-meter race kicks off at 10 a.m. with the men's 10,000-meter race to follow at 11 a.m. The meet will be held at Haggin Oaks Golf Course in Sacramento, Calif. Live results can be found on CalBears.com.

The top three teams in each NCAA region automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships. The Bears are contending for one of the three team spots, in addition to the ten at-large bids to secure a trip to the championship meet. The top five student-athletes who are not on qualifying teams also automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships.

In their last appearance at the NCAA West Regionals in 2019, the men's team took 18th-place while the women's team took 12th-place. The 2020 NCAA West Regionals competition was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Six men will toe the line this Friday for California, with Garrett MacQuiddy once again leading the pack to continue his standout season. MacQuiddy was the top Cal finisher at three out of four meets this season. In his most recent performance at the Pac-12 Championships he crossed the line in 25:15.5 to take 34th-place.

Carrick Denker also returns to the track for the fifth time this season at the NCAA West Regionals. Denker took 39th-place at the Pac-12 Championships to secure a second top-40 finish for the men's team. Colin FitzGerald will boost the men's squad in Sacramento, following his 54th-place finish at the Pac-12 Championships.

On the women's side, seven student-athletes are set to compete in the NCAA West Regionals. Erin Archibeck returns for her second meet of the season after being the first to cross the line for the Bears at the Pac-12 Championships. Archibeck ran the 6,000-meter course in 21:56.8 to claim 37th-place.

"I'm looking forward to racing at the regional level," Archibeck said. "I haven't had a lot of opportunities to race with the team yet, so I'm really excited to spend more time with them this weekend."

Making her season debut Friday is Marea Zlatunich. She last competed for the Bears at the 2020 Pac-12 Championships in March where she recorded her personal best time of 20:53.2 to secure 40th-place.

Meredith Corda and Jessica Nye round out the women's entries at Friday's competition. Corda placed 55th at the Pac-12 Championships with Nye following in 68th place.
