Team Blue Bests Team Gold At Head Of The Lagoon
FOSTER CITY, CA – Competing in the first official race of the year, the Cal women's rowing team competed in a split squad race at the annual Head of the Lagoon in Foster City. The Bears had two boats in the Frosh 4, Varsity 4, and Collegiate 8 with Team Blue winning two of those three races.
"A big part of our team culture every year is the competition between Team Blue and Team Gold," said head coach Al Acosta. Today at the Head of the Lagoon Team Blue beat Team Gold. Gold beat Blue in the Frosh 4 race but Team Blue came back to win the Varsity 4 and the Eight by one second."
In the Varsity 4 race, Washington was the overall winner, finishing with a time of 20:42.2. Team Blue captured fourth with a time of 21:40.8. Team Gold finished seventh with a time of 22:06.9.
In the Frosh 4 Team Gold took first with a time of 21:21.3. Team Blue was narrowly edged out, finishing in second with a time of 21:22.3.
In the eights, Washington was once again the victor overall, finishing with a time of 17:59.1. Team Blue took fourth with a time of 20:01.6 defeating Team Gold who took fifth with a time of 20:03.8.
"We have two intrasquad competitions left for the fall," added Acosta. "Blue versus Gold Water Polo and a regatta where the captains make the lineups (as they did today). The team has made a lot of progress this fall in training and building culture and we're excited about seeing the team continue to push in the last few weeks of the fall semester. Of course, we're also looking forward to seeing which team earns the coveted Blue/Gold trophy."
