Utah Takes Doubles Title at SDSU Fall Classic

Nov 14, 2021

SAN DIEGO/LAS VEGAS – The Utah Women's tennis team finished off the weekend at both the San Diego State Fall Classic and Jolene Watanabe Classic on Sunday afternoon.

"I am excited the way we ended the fall," head coach Ric Mortera said. "I am happy for Katya and Lindsay winning their first collegiate title. They got better as the tournament went on and capped it off with a solid match against a good Pac 12 opponent. It was a nice run by Anastasia and Samantha, especially it being some of her first few tournaments in college. Lindsay and Madison did a nice job finishing the rest of their weekend after their respective opening matches. With Madeline's competitive spirit, I believe she will be ready to go come January. Overall, a positive weekend for us and a good way to finish our first half of the year."

At SDSU, the Utes were able to come away with a doubles title. Lindsay Hung and Katya Hersh defeated Oregon doubles team Luescher/ Petchey, 6-4, to take first place in the Doubles Black Draw. Following closely behind them, Utah Doubles team Linda Huang and Madison Tattini took third after defeating Kuo/Stelse from the Air Force Academy, 6-4.

In the singles gold draw, Huang fought for 3rd place against Oregon player Sophie Luescher after making it to the semifinals. Huang lost her first set but was able to win her second, 6-4, taking the match to a 7-point tiebreaker set. Huang remained neck and neck with her opponent until she was narrowly defeated, 11-9, giving her 4th place.

In the gold draw, Hung beat out opponent Ella Pachl (UCSD), 6-2 6-3. Tattini won two consolation finals in both the singles gold draw and the singles black draw. Tattini defeated her opponent, Sophie Pearson of UCSD, in the singles black draw, 6-1 6-0.

In the singles red draw, Hersh came away with 3rd place against opponent Cecile Morin from SDSU after winning the match, 7-5 3-6 (10-7).
