BERKELEY – The California men's soccer program signed a strong class of five new Golden Bears, head coach Kevin Grimes said on Monday. The recruiting class is composed of Marco Brougher, Emmanuel Johnson, Jun Lee, Rohan McEligot, and Cameron Robie, who all hail from the Golden State.
"The five-member recruiting class replenishes the outstanding senior class we just graduated," Grimes said. "These players all have great attributes to contribute immediately. We look forward to having them part of our team culture in the fall of 2022."
A 17-year-old attacking midfielder from Irvine, McEligot is a product of the Strikers FC Academy. A talented goalscorer and playmaker, he participated with fellow new Bear Robie in the Talentprojekt, a year-long program that immersed select U.S. players in Germany, where they attended school, trained and played soccer against top youth players from various Bundesliga academies. The 5-8 McEligot earned trial invitations from German clubs Borussia Mönchengladbach and Fortuna Dusseldorf.
Robie, another Striker FC Academy product, is a left back/center back from Aliso Viejo. The 5-11 defender took part in the Talentprojekt in Germany alongside McEligot. Fortunate Dusseldorf invited him to a trial that was subsequently canceled due to the global pandemic. Also strong in the classroom, Robie
has a 4.0 GPA at Pacific Coast High School, at which he's a member of the dean's list and is an honor roll student.
Brougher, a San Francisco Bay Area product from Los Altos Hills, is a 6-4 goalkeeper who has trained with the Oakland Roots Academy and was a team captain at the De Anza
Force Academy. The 17-year-old, who has a 4.1 GPA at Woodside Priory School, formerly competed in alpine skiing and was nationally ranked in the sport.
Johnson, from Fairfield and Elk Grove Charter School, is a product of the Barça Residency Academy and the Sacramento Republic Academy. The 6-foot Johnson is a high-scoring winger who played for Napa Valley 1839 and Vallejo Omega FC over the summer. He turns 18 in May.
Lee is a central midfielder from Irvine and Strikers FC Academy. A captain for his Strikers FC U-16/17 squad and a captain for his Northwood
High School team, the 5-7 Lee was named to the Pacific Coast League's first team.
