Pac-12 universities to determine student-athlete educational benefits & academic awards
The Pac-12 Board of Directors, in its first regular meeting of the 2021-22 academic year, unanimously agreed that each Pac-12 member university has the discretion to determine how it may offer education-related benefits on an individual institution basis, consistent with the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision in Alston v. NCAA and NCAA rules. This decision is consistent with feedback provided by the Pac-12 Student-Athlete Leadership Team as well as the broader Pac-12 Council.
The Pac-12 Board of Directors also stated its unanimous position that the education-related benefits permitted by the Alston decision that may be offered by Pac-12 universities should be applied in a manner that does not have an unintentionally adverse impact on the financial aid available to student-athletes. This position aligns with the Pac-12 mission to develop the next generation of leaders by championing excellence in academics, athletics, and the well-being of student-athletes.
