Nov 15, 2021

STANFORD, Calif. -- Stanford sophomore Joy Yun was named the first Women's Fencer of the Week by the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation on Tuesday.

Yun went 17-4 in saber at the Western Invitational at the Air Force Academy on Saturday and Sunday, leading Stanford to a 7-2 record, the third-best in the 10-team field. On Saturday, Yun won two bouts against defending national champion Notre Dame and another against powerhouse Columbia. On Sunday, she went 7-0 and helped the saber team to a 7-2 record overall.

After losing to Notre Dame and Columbia to start the competition, Stanford won seven consecutive matches, including all four on Sunday. Yun's winning percentage of .809 was the best on the team, among women and men.

Yun, from Portland, Oregon, earned All-America second-team honors last season, placing seventh at nationals. Overall, she went 25-12 in a shortened season.

This is the first MPSF weekly honor awarded by the conference, which is in its first season sponsoring the sport.
