Cougars Take Five Set Thriller From No. 16 Oregon

PULLMAN, Wash. (November 18, 2021) – No. 22 Washington State opened its final homestand with a five-set win (25-16, 25-19, 23-25, 20-25, 15-12) over visiting No. 16 Oregon at Bohler Gym Thursday evening.
 
The Cougars (18-9, 12-5 Pac-12) recorded their fourth-straight home win, posted their fourth win over a ranked team and swept the season series with Oregon for the second time in the last three seasons after doing so in 2019. The Ducks dropped to 20-7 overall and 11-6 in conference play.
 
Three Cougars recorded double-digit kills led by Magda Jehlarova's 15 while Katy Ryan added 12 for her fourth double-digit kills effort of the season and Kalayah Williams finished with 10. Jehlarova led WSU with four blocks while Williams and Hannah Pukis each added three. Ryan also hit a team-high .500 (12-24).
 
In the opening set, the Cougars hit .357, held Oregon to a .086 attack percentage and closed the set with a 12-5 run to take the opener 25-16. In the second, WSU used a 10-3 run to build a lead as Ryan heated up with six kills while WSU tallied four service aces to post a 25-19 win and build a 2-0 advantage.
 
Oregon evened things up after hitting 66 percent to take set three 25-23 and again hit 65 percent to post a 25-20 win in the fourth set.
 
In the final set, the Cougars took advantage of a couple Oregon attack errors and used a 5-1 stretch to build a 9-6 lead after a Penny Tusa kill. A Williams kill gave WSU a 14-11 lead before Ryan clinched it with kill No. 12 of the night. Williams and Argentina Ung each tallied three kills in the deciding set.
 
Washington State will wrap up their home schedule Sunday against Oregon State at Noon.

Freshman Katy Ryan stepped up for the Cougars, hitting a team-high .500 (12-24) to record her fourth game with double-digit kills.
