No. 3 UCLA Advances to MPSF Semifinals

STANFORD, Calif. -- No. 3 UCLA (17-3, 1-2 MPSF) advanced to the MPSF semifinals with a 26-3 win over sixth-seeded Penn State Behrend (0-20) on Friday afternoon at Stanford's  Avery Aquatic Center. UCLA improved to 3-0 in the series history.

Junior Tommy Gruwell paced the UCLA offense with a career-high-tying five goals. He also added an assist to score six points. Graduate Chasen Travisano and junior Gabe Discipulo also had six points apiece, each with three goals and three assists.

Junior Bernardo Maurizi got the start in the cage and played the first quarter, registering four saves while allowing one goal. Sophomore Garret Griggs played the final three quarters and tallied 11 assists while surrendering two scores.

> UCLA outscored the Lions 9-1 in the opening period, including the first nine goals of the game.
> Seven different Bruins scored in the opening period.
> Gruwell led UCLA with two goals in the first frame.
> Maurizi had four saves and gave up one goal in the first quarter.

> Graduate Nicolas Saveljic and redshirt sophomore Jack Larsen each scored their second goals of the game in the third quarter.
> Junior Cameron Reagan and redshirt freshman Gianpiero Di Martire became the 10th and 11th Bruin, respectively, to score in the game.

> The Bruins won the fourth quarter, 5-1, to provide the 26-3 final score.
> Gruwell tacked on two more scores in the final stanza (7:02 and 4:17) to finish the game with five goals.
> Reagan (2:02), freshman Chase Dodd (1:23), and sophomore Guillermo Ocasio (0:34) each netted their second goal of the game in the fourth quarter.

The Bruins will face second-seeded USC in the second semifinal of the 2021 MPSF Championship on Saturday, Nov. 20 at 11:15 a.m. PT.
