Beavers Dim Sun Devils in Four Sets, Goings Collects Double-Double

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State volleyball earned its third straight victory over Arizona State with a four-set win over the Sun Devils on Wednesday afternoon in front of Beaver Nation. Senior Maddie Goings led the Beavers with a season-high 21 kills, hitting .320, and a career-high 25 digs.

Two other Oregon State players collected double-digit kills, including freshman Kateryna Tkachenko's 13 and Lindsey Schell's 10 on the afternoon. Goings' double-double is her third of the season as the Aledo, Texas native also served up two aces and a pair of block assists.

Senior Grace Massey chipped in 24 digs with seven aces while freshman Izzi Szulczewski was all over the stat sheet with a game-high 39 assists, eight digs, six blocks, four kills and two aces.

As a team, the Beavers attacked at a .192 rate while Arizona State used a .112 hitting percentage in four sets. OSU held the advantage in every category, including kills (56-41), digs (77-66), assists (50-37), blocks (14-5), and aces (6-2).

DiLara Unal delivered her eighth ace of her career to spark a 4-0 Beaver rally, giving OSU an early lead at 5-2 in the first frame. Arizona State clawed its way back, evening the score at 12-12 but Tkachenko delivered her second kill of the set to stop the three-point Sun Devils surge.  Out of the media break, ASU took its first lead of the frame but a service and two attacking errors forced the Sun Devils to call a timeout as OSU lead, 18-16. At the Beaver set point, Oregon State took the first set off another attacking error, 25-18.

In the second, Arizona State took the first five points until Goings hit a ball to the back corner to get the Beavers on the board. The Sun Devils maintained its momentum until the Beavers rattled off four straight, pulling within one at 11-10. Out of the media timeout, OSU put together four straight to take its first lead of the frame, 16-15. Arizona State sealed the next seven of the eight points, forcing the Beavers to call a timeout as the Sun Devils held the 22-17 advantage. ASU maintained its momentum and evened the match with a 25-19 set victory.

Oregon State jumped out to an early 6-2 lead in the third frame but ASU responded and evened the frame at six all. After an ASU timeout, the Beavers won a challenge to pull ahead 14-9 after Ellie Turner delivered an ace to the back line.  Szulczewski's second ace of the game gave the Orange & Black the 20-14 lead as OSU eventually took the third, 25-17.

After trailing by one early in the fourth, Oregon State took the 10-7 lead and never looked back. The Beavers took their largest lead of the set at 11, scoring nine of the next ten points to make the score 23-12 in front of Beaver Nation. Arizona State kept the game going with back-to-back points as OSU held match point, 24-15, but the Orange & Black eventually sealed the win off a service ace, 25-17.

The Beavers remain home and conclude the 2021 campaign by hosting the Rivalry Series match against Oregon on Friday, Nov. 26 at 5 p.m. Prior to the match, OSU will honor its three seniors in Maddie Goings, Grace Massey and Lindsey Schell.
