Blue-Chip Prospect Signs With Utah Women’s Tennis
SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah women's tennis head coach Ric Mortera has announced the signing of Kaila Barksdale for the 2022-23 season. Barksdale is the first Blue-Chip recruit to sign with Utah women's tennis.
"This is a tremendous day for our program; to have a player and person of Kaila's caliber joining us is very exciting," Head Coach Ric Mortera stated. "She is a great athlete, and we have enjoyed getting to know her and her family throughout this process. She will be an integral part of what we are building at Utah."
Barksdale comes to the University of Utah as one of the top prospects in the country. She is ranked 23rd in the nation and is the seventh-best player out of the state of California. During her sophomore and junior year, Barksdale was the CIF Singles Champion (2019 & 2020-21); while being a finalist her senior year.
Playing at Westview High School, Barksdale only lost one match her entire high school career and was named the MVP in her sophomore, junior and senior seasons; while being named Player of the Year, her sophomore and junior season.
Barksdale was the champion at the USTA National Level 3 event held in Lakewood, California, on the junior circuit. She was also crowned champion at the UTR San Diego Open Championships.
She played in the USTA Girls 18s Sections Invitational in Mobile, Alabama, and was a semifinalist. Barksdale advanced to the round of 16 at the Billie Jean King Hard Courts National, which was held in San Diego, Calif.
Barksdale is 47-10 since the 2020 season and is a combined 29-1 when playing four- or five-star recruits.
Barksdale currently trains with her father, Keith, in San Diego. She is the daughter of Keith and Joanne. She has volunteered with her dad to teach tennis clinics for younger kids. Barksdale is set to graduate this spring before joining the Utes.
