Season Ends With Loss At Arizona

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Sun Devil Volleyball had their final match of the season on Saturday afternoon, ending with disappointment in a loss at Arizona in three sets (25-11, 25-16, 27-25).

Notable Stats

  • Arizona State (14-17, 7-13 Pac-12) out-blocked Arizona (16-15, 8-12 Pac-12), eight to seven in the final match of the season. The Sun Devils out-blocked their opponents in three of their last four matches to end the season.
  • Due to a season sweep by the Cats, they take the full Territorial Cup point.
  • Leading the Sun Devils in kills, sophomore pin hitter Marta Levinska had 11 along with six digs and four blocks. Levinska had 24 matches reaching double figures in kills this season.
  • Today's match put junior Iman Isanovic in the top 10 for kills in a single season at Arizona State with 490, taking sole possession of 10th. She is behind Christine Garner with 495 in the 1993 season.
  • Junior middle blocker Beatrice Badini had a career-high six blocks, leading all players in the match. She also had two kills off the bench.
  • Sophomore setter Ella Snyder led the team in assists with 23 while also adding nine digs.
  • Libero duties were split as grad Jamye Cox played the first two sets and junior Annika Larson played the final set. Cox had 11 digs, her seventh match in a row reaching double figures, and Larson had 10.

Set One: Arizona 25, Arizona State 11
The Sun Devils called a timeout with the Wildcats up 10-5, responding with a block by Claire Jeter and Levinska coming out of the timeout to stop the run. A kill from Arizona put it up 15-9, as ASU called its second timeout of the set. An 8-0 run by the Wildcats jumped them out to a 23-10 lead. A block from Badini and Levinska ended the run, but the damage had been done already. Arizona took the set on a block of its own, 25-11.

Set Two: Arizona 25, Arizona State 16
The Wildcats jumped out to a 7-2 lead after an ace, forcing the Sun Devils to take a timeout. A 5-0 run by ASU brought it within one, 8-7, after a kill from Levinska, resulting in a timeout for Arizona. The Wildcats had four points in a row to lead by five, 12-7, with an Arizona hitting error stopping the run. Another 4-0 run by the Wildcats made it 24-14 and they ultimately took the set on a kill.

Set Three: Arizona 27, Arizona State 25
A 4-0 spurt by the Wildcats jumped them out to a 10-4 lead and a kill from Jeter stopped the run. Three in a row by the Sun Devils brought them within five, 14-9, forcing an Arizona timeout. The Wildcats had an ace to bring their lead back up to seven, 19-12, resulting in ASU's final timeout. Kills from Badini and Cyr made it 23-21, resulting in a Wildcat timeout. After a 3-0 Sun Devil run to tie it at 24-24, the set went to extra points. Arizona ultimately took the set and match on a kill, 27-25.
