Utah Downs Hawaii, 73-57, for Fifth Win of the Season
HONOLULU – The University of Utah women's basketball team earned its fifth win of the season on the second day of the Rainbow Wahine Showdown after defeating Hawaii 73-57. Utah hit ten three-pointers in the win and improved to 34-10 when hitting ten or more threes in a game since 2009-10.
Brynna Maxwell's 23 points led the Utes (5-1). She hit five threes in the game, which is the third time she accomplished this feat this season. Dru Gylten and Kennady McQueen rounded out the double-figure scorers with ten points apiece. Utah hit 12 threes in the win and shot 44 percent from the field against Hawaii (2-4).
Utah opened up the contest by scoring the first five points on a layup by Jenna Johnson and a Kennady McQueen three. After the Rainbow Wahine hit a three-pointer, Dasia Young answered with a three of her own, making it 8-3. A Brynna Maxwell jumper put the Utes ahead 10-5 with six minutes to play in the quarter. Following the jumper by Maxwell, Utah scored two more points in the quarter, and Hawaii battled back, tying the game at 12-12.
The Utes slowly grew their lead to eight points as they scored the first eight points of the second quarter. During the 8-0 run, Utah had threes by Andrea Torres and Maxwell and added a pair of free throws by Kelsey Rees. Utah stretched its lead to double-digits following a three by Inês Vieira and a couple of free throws by Isabel Palmer. The Rainbow Wahines trimmed the lead down to eight, but Utah grew the lead back to 13 late in the first half. The Utes would take a 34-26 lead into halftime.
Coming out of the half, Utah extended its lead to 12, 40-28, after back-to-back layups by Johnson and Young. Utah continued to hold onto a double-figure lead, and the lead was up to 14 after an old-fashion three-point play by Gylten. Over three minute span late in the third quarter, the Utes held the Rainbow Wahine without a field goal, and after three-quarters of the game, Utah led 55-43.
The Utes opened the fourth quarter with back-to-back threes by Maxwell and Gylten, taking a 16-point, 61-45 lead over the Rainbow Wahine. Hawaii continued to chip away at the Utes lead, and after a 6-0 run, the lead was down to 10. That was the closest Hawaii would get in the contest as they extended the lead back to 17, 68-51, with 2:40 to go in the game. Ten points would be as close as Hawaii would get as Utah came away with a 73-57 victory.
Utah was led in scoring by Brynna Maxwell as she scored 23 points in the win. She was 8-of-15 from the floor, including 5-of-9 from threes. This season, this was her third game, hitting five three-pointers in a single game and the first time since Nov. 13. Dru Gylten led the Utes with seven rebounds and five assists.
