Chou, Thomas Dazzle as Bruins Dominate Spartans, 112-33
LOS ANGELES – The Bruins dominated San José State on Sunday afternoon at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom, taking a 112-33 victory behind 31 points from Natalie Chou and 32 points from IImar'I Thomas.
Chou also added a career-high 11 assists in the effort. Jaelynn Penn was UCLA's third 20+ point scorer of the game, putting up a season-high 20 points and grabbing eight boards on the night. The Bruins recorded a season-high 31 assists on 43 made baskets.
The Spartans jumped out to a quick 4-2 lead before Penn scored five straight to make it 7-4, Bruins (6:19). UCLA led by three out of the media timeout and Charisma Osborne extended the lead with a strong layup inside (12-7). Osborne then connected on a triple ahead of two buckets inside from Thomas, pushing the advantage to 19-10 (1:28). The Bruins continued to surge as Penn converted a three-point play with 38.6 seconds to play in the first (24-12). The Bruins would go on to take a 28-12 lead into the second quarter.
The Bruins dominated in the second quarter to the fullest extent, scoring 27 points and holding the Spartans scoreless to take a 55-12 lead into the second half. The Bruins went 12-for-14 from the field in the frame, including a 5-for-5 effort from Thomas. UCLA finished with 16 assists on 23 made baskets in the first half.
Natalie Chou was the story of the third quarter, scoring 15 points in the frame on 6-of-7 shooting. She also grabbed three rebounds and added two assists in the quarter. Six total Bruins scored in the third quarter as UCLA extended its lead to 83-22.
Chou would continue her career game as the fourth quarter progressed, finishing the contest with career highs in points (31), assists (11), and threes made (6). Thomas would also finish with an impressive line of 32 points and nine rebounds, good her first 30+ point game as a Bruin.
