First-Teamer Elijah Hicks Leads Cal's All-Pac-12 Picks

Elijah Hicks leads 11 Cal players honored on the 2021 All-Pac-12 Teams selected by the league's coaches.

SAN FRANCISCO – Elijah Hicks' selection as a first-team defensive back highlights the honoring of 11 Cal football student-athletes on the 2021 All-Pac-12 Football Team announced by the conference Tuesday along with its annual performance awards and yearly recognitions. Hicks earned a spot the league's annual post-season all-conference team selected by the league's coaches for the first time in his career.

The Golden Bears' 10 other picks were honorable mention selections in Nick Alftin (AP), Marqez Bimage (LB), Matthew Cindric (OL), Ben Coleman (OL), Chase Garbers (QB), Cameron Goode (LB), Lu-Magia Hearns III (DB), McKade Mettauer (OL), Nikko Remigio (RET) and JH Tevis (DL). Hearns was also honorable mention for Defensive Freshman Player of the Year, presented by Nextiva honor.

 Goode was selected to the league's honorable mention team for the third consecutive season, while Remigio has been honorable mention each of the past two campaigns. Each of the other selections were honored for the first time.  

Cal has had a total of 14 football student-athletes honored on at least one All-Pac-12 team in 2021. Below are notes on each of the Cal players named to 2021 All-Pac-12 Teams and the media outlets that have selected them. Extended bios are available by clicking on each of their names.
 
Nick Alftin, TE, 6-5, 250, R-Jr., 4th Season At Cal, Woodside, CA (Archbishop Mitty HS)

— Played in all 12 games of his 2021 junior season off the bench primarily as one of the club's top special teams players
— Had both of Cal's blocked kicks in 2021 and currently shares the Pac-12 lead and is tied for second nationally
— Had blocked punts against Washington State and Oregon State with the Golden Bears scoring a touchdown on a 38-yard pass play from Chase Garbers to Trevon Clark on the next play after the blocked punt against the Beavers
— Has played in 29 career contests since his 2018 arrival at Cal including one start at outside linebacker as a 2019 redshirt freshman at Ole Miss

— Played in each of Cal's 12 games as a 2021 senior including five starts in his first season with the Golden Bears as a graduate transfer from Texas and contributed 40 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss (-29 yards), 2.0 sacks (-17 yards), two pass breakups, three quarterback hurries, three fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles with his three fumble recoveries currently second in the Pac-12 and tied for third nationally
— Has played in a total of 46 collegiate games including his first 34 at Texas from 2017-19 and logged collegiate totals of 58 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss (-38 yards), 3.0 sacks (-25 yards), four pass breakups, four quarterback hurries, four forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries,

— Has played in 28 games with 27 starts over the past three seasons with 14 starts at right guard and 13 at center including 11 of 12 contests in his 2021 junior campaign
— Helped Cal roll up over 500 total yards of offense three times in 2021 (636 at Stanford, 534 vs. Sacramento State, 517 vs. Oregon State) and more than 200 yards rushing on four occasions (352 at Stanford, 255 vs. Oregon State, 246 vs. Sacramento State, 213 vs. Colorado)
— Helped Cal break a Big Game record with 636 total yards of offense that were its most since also compiling 636 in a double overtime home win over Oregon in 2016, while the Golden Bears' 352 rushing yards were their most since rushing for 431 against Washington in 2008

— Started 11 of 12 games as a 2021 sophomore all at left guard and has played in a total of 14 career games including three off the bench as a 2020 redshirt freshman
— Helped Cal roll up over 500 total yards of offense three times in 2021 (636 at Stanford, 534 vs. Sacramento State, 517 vs. Oregon State) and more than 200 yards rushing on four occasions (352 at Stanford, 255 vs. Oregon State, 246 vs. Sacramento State, 213 vs. Colorado)
— Became the first Cal player to win Pac-12 Offensive Lineman of the Week honors since its' inception in 2019 for his performance in Cal's 41-11 win over Stanford in the Big Game when he had the highest internal grade of Cal's offensive linemen (90%) during a historic performance with the Golden Bears producing a Big Game record 636 yards of total offense including 352 on the ground that was the most by Cal in any game since the Bears rushed for 431 yards against Washington in 2008, and threw a key block to spring Marcel Dancy on a 76-yard touchdown that was Cal's longest since an 81-yard touchdown run by Brendan Bigelow at Ohio State in 2012

— Started 11 games as a 2021 redshirt senior and completed 223-of-348 passes (64.1%) for 2533 yards with 16 touchdowns and eight interceptions for a 135.8 passer rating with his completions, pass attempts, completion percentage, passing yards and touchdown passes all career highs
— Ranks among Pac-12 leaders in 2021 in per-game total offense (2nd, 271.7 ypg), completions (3rd, 20.27 cpg), passing yards (4th, 230.3 ypg), as well as total plays (2nd, 452), with all numbers also career highs
— Has played in 36 career games with 34 starts and posted a 19-15 record as Cal's starting quarterback as well as a 19-11 mark in games in which he played at least a half
— Has completed 589-of-959 career passes (62.4%) for 6582 yards with 50 touchdowns and 24 interceptions for a 132.2 passer rating, and is among Cal's all-time leaders in total offense (7756, 4th), touchdown passes (T6th), passer efficiency (7th), passing yards (7th), 300-plus yard passing games (4, T7th) and 250-yard passing games (9, T9th)
— Cal's all-time leader for both rushing yards and rushing touchdowns for a quarterback with 1174 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground on 331 carries

— Started and played in 37 career games after redshirting as a 2016 true freshman and finished his collegiate career with 171 tackles, 36.5 tackles for loss (-183 yards), 21.5 sacks (-132 yards), two interceptions that he returned for 70 yards and a pair of touchdowns, 10 pass breakups, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and 13 quarterback hurries

— Has played in 22 games over the last three seasons since his arrival at Cal in 2018 and registered 85 career points (15-20 FG, 40-41 PAT) while also kicking off 63 times for 3751 yards (59.5 avg) with 24 touchbacks

— One of only three Pac-12 players to return a kickoff for a touchdown (#T11 NCAA) in 2021 with a 99-yarder against Sacramento State the first of his career, while also adding returns of 67 and 58 yards at UCLA that were the second and third-longest of his career
— Led the 2021 team with a career-high 859 all-purpose yards, adding 10 punt returns for 70 yards and seven rushes for 57  
— Has played in 36 career games with 16 starts and has career totals of 97 receptions for 903 yards and seven touchdowns, as well as 44 punt returns for 344 yards, 20 kick returns for 549 yards and 1 TD), 14 rushes and 75 yards rushing, and five tackles
