Men's Tennis Announces 2022 Schedule
TEMPE - The wait is over. Sun Devil Men's Tennis' 2022 schedule is officially here! Arizona State starts its season with a three-match home stretch beginning Jan. 14. Of the 20 contests on ASU's schedule, 11 of them will happen in Tempe. ASU will host nine dual matches and a pair of tournaments in 2022, and five of those teams coming to Tempe finished in the ITA top-30 last season.
"I'm super excited about this schedule we've put together," head coach Matt Hill said. "We're big believers that in order to be the best we have to beat the best, which is why year-in and year-out we schedule the best teams from across the country. We're not a program that shies away from a challenge. We're also super excited about our two inaugural tournaments to be hosted at the Kiwanis Tennis Center in Tempe. Those will be great opportunities for the community to come out and support the program and see some high-level tennis."
Top matches this spring include a March 6 date against Oklahoma who has the No. 13 ranked doubles duo of Alen Martinez and Nathan Han. On March 20, the Sun Devils play No. 4 Alexander Hoogmartens and the rest of the UCLA Bruins. The Sun Devils' final match of the season will be against Oregon, and that'll feature the No. 12-ranked doubles team Joshua Charlton and Quinn Vandecasteele. Conference play begins March 18 against USC, and senior day is slated for April 10 against Utah.
Six players return for ASU this year, while five fresh faces join the team. Three freshmen in No. 8 ITA Newcomer Murphy Cassone, Nicola Cigna and Filipe Costa joined the squad over the summer. They're joined by transfers Fabien Salle (Louisville) and Jacob Bullard (Texas). Salle finished 2021 ranked 75th in the ITA singles poll after going 13-2 in the year and collecting All-ACC Second Team honors. The former Cardinal peaked at No. 57 last year. Bullard went 13-9 overall with the Longhorns and earned Academic All-Big 12 Second Team status last year.
The Sun Devils went 17-9 in the 2020-21 season with impressive wins against UCLA and Stanford in the Pac-12 Championships. The team reached the second round of the NCAA Championships thanks to a 4-3 win over No. 32 Wichita State before exiting with a loss to No. 7 TCU.
ASU competed in five tournaments this fall. In the Boston Invite, sophomore Max McKennon defeated No. 4-ranked Duarte Vale of Florida. In the ITA All-Americans Championship Oct. 4-5, McKennon and Salle defeated No. 38 doubles duo Huntley Allen and Julian Steinhausen of SMU.
