Leger-Walker Named Pac-12 Player of the Week

Dec 13, 2021

SAN FRANCISCO – On Monday, Dec. 13, the Pac-12 Conference named Washington State women's basketball sophomore Charlisse Leger-Walker the Pac-12 Player of the Week for the week ending on Dec. 12. It is Leger-Walker's first league player of the week honor, as she becomes the program's first player to win the award since the 2019-20 season.

The 5-11 guard from Waikato, New Zealand averaged 18.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 2.5 assists in a pair of come-from-behind wins this week at Gonzaga (51-49) on Dec. 8 and at home against Boise State (62-55) on Dec. 12.

Leger-Walker got her week started by scoring a team-high 14 points to help Washington State pick up its first win at Gonzaga since 2014. The Cougs also became just the third team to win at Gonzaga since 2018.  The guard followed up Wednesday's performance with a team-best 23 points in a comeback win over Boise State at Beasley Coliseum. With the win over Boise State, WSU has won 13 of its last 14 home games against non-conference foes.

Leger-Walker played a huge role in both comebacks, as she scored a combined 28 points in the second half of games this week. The guard also had a few clutch moments in the closing seconds of each game to ensure her team of victory. At Gonzaga, Leger-Walker pulled down a defensive rebound in traffic with five seconds remaining and called a timeout before the Bulldogs could collapse in on her. She would hit a free throw on the ensuing possession to extend her team's lead to 51-49, which was the final score. Leger-Walker then went on and scored 19 of her 23 points against Boise State in the second half. She once again came up clutch in the final seconds against the Broncos. With WSU leading 58-55 and 35 seconds remaining the game, Leger-Walker ripped the ball out of a BSU player's hand and scored a break-away layup to put her team up by five and seal the victory for the Cougs.

Leger-Walker becomes the 15th WSU player in program history to be named Pac-10/12 Player of the Week. She is the first Cougar to win the weekly accolade since Chanelle Molina earned the honor back on Jan. 6, 2020. It is also Leger-Walker's eighth career Pac-12 weekly award, as she was named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week a program-best seven times last season.

Washington State opens a brief two-game road trip this week to close out the non-conference portion of its 2021-22 schedule. The Cougars kick-off the excursion this Saturday, Dec. 18, at No. 20/17 BYU for an 11 a.m. PT contest. WSU will then head to Ithaca, New York this Sunday, Dec. 19, to take on Cornell at 12 p.m. PT.
