The Pro Football Hall of Fame revealed on Thursday its coach finalist for the Class of 2022 is former UCLA head football coach Dick Vermeil.
Vermeil, who served as a head coach in the NFL for 15 seasons, was UCLA's head football coach for the 1974 and 1975 seasons. He compiled a record of 15-5-3 while in charge of the Bruin program, including a victory in the 1976 Rose Bowl Game over top-ranked and unbeaten Ohio State. Vermeil was named the 1975 Pac-8 Coach of the Year.
Vermeil worked as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles (1976-82), St. Louis Rams (1997-99) and Kansas City Chiefs (2001-08). While with the Eagles, he guided Philadelphia to four playoff appearances, highlighted by an NFC Championship win and an appearance in Super Bowl XV against the then-Oakland Raiders in 1980.
Vermeil left coaching in 1982 to pursue a broadcasting career as an NFL and college football analyst. He returned to the field to direct the Rams to a win in Super Bowl XXXIV over the Tennessee Titans. Vermeil coached the Chiefs from 2001-08, posting an 80-44 record during that span. In 15 years as an NFL head coach, he produced a 126-114 record, including the playoffs.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2022 will be inducted during NFL Honors, which will be televised on February 10 at 6 p.m. PT on ABC.
