Season Begins With Two Meets For No. 12 Gym Devils

TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 12 Gym Devils are kicking off the 2022 season with two meets this week, beginning with the home opener against No. 13 Kentucky on Wednesday at 7 p.m. MST before traveling to compete in the Collegiate Challenge against fellow Pac-12 teams on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. MST in Anaheim.

Live scoring will be available as well. For the Collegiate Challenge, there will be no live stream or live scoring. Meet Outlook
The first meet of the week against No. 13 Kentucky will bring an immediate challenge for Arizona State. The two teams saw each other last season at the NCAA Regional Finals where they tied for third place, each scoring a 197.600. The Wildcats finished at No. 11 in the final rankings, two spots behind the Sun Devils. In the all-time regular season series, it is locked at 2-2, last meeting in 2015 when ASU took third behind Kentucky and LSU in a tri-meet.

At the Collegiate Challenge, Arizona State will compete in a podium meet with three fellow Pac-12 teams: Arizona, Oregon State and Washington. Both Cal and UCLA were originally going to compete, but both teams pulled out of the meet. Two years ago, the Gym Devils competed at the Collegiate Challenge where ASU took second place in its session, beating Auburn and Penn State.

Sun Devil Outlook
No. 12 Arizona State (0-0)

  • The Sun Devils are ranked No. 12 in the WCGA Preseason Poll after finishing the 2021 season ranked No. 9, the best finish for the program since 2006.
  • The team finished fourth overall in the 2021 Pac-12 regular season standings, as well as in the Pac-12 championship. They earned the No. 11 seed in the NCAA tournament, the Gym Devils first time earning a seed, where they advanced to the regional finals for the first time. 
  • The Sun Devils return 15 experienced gymnasts to the 2022 roster. The team is led by junior All-American Hannah Scharf who went to the NCAA Championships as an individual and earned Second Team All-America honors, adding to her WCGA regular season nod in the all-around. The Gym Devils welcome two newcomers to the team for this upcoming season in freshmen Mallory Marcheli and Alex Theodorou.
