Bears Win 12 Of 13 On Day 1 In Hawaii

Valentina Ivanov posted two wins on the first day of Hawaii's tournament.

HONOLULU – California women's tennis captured 12 of 13 matches to begin the Weinman Foundation Invitational on Thursday at the UH Tennis Complex. Cal collected singles and doubles wins from their nationally ranked Golden Bears and from the newest Bear, Katja Wiersholm, who made her collegiate debut in Hawaii's tournament.
Ranked 108th in singles, Valentina Ivanov defeated Hawaii's Lea Romain, 6-2, 3-6, 6-0, and Jessica Alsola, ranked 110th, topped the Rainbow Wahine's Gitte Heynemans, 6-2, 6-4. In doubles, the 27th-ranked duo of Alsola and Erin Richardson beat UH's Heynemans and Romain, 8-4, while Ivanov and Haley Giavara bested Washington State's Elyse Tse and Yang Lee, 8-2.
Wiersholm defeated the Cougars' Tse, 6-1, 6-2, and partnered with fellow freshman Makenna Thiel to beat Hawaii's Tal Talya Zandberg and Madison Kim, 8-1.
The Weinman Foundation Invitational continues on Friday, with doubles starting at 9 a.m. HT and doubles following at 10 a.m. HT.
