Cal Posts Strong Start In Honolulu

HONOLULU – The California men's tennis team had a strong start to the New Year, winning seven of nine matches on the first day of the Hawaii Invitational on Thursday. Golden Bear seniors Yuta Kikuchi and Philip Hjorth won in singles and doubles at the UH Tennis Complex.
The Bears were 6-1 in singles, including Kikuchi's 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 victory over Hawaii's Blaz Seric, Hjorth's 6-2, 6-3 win over BYU's Wally Thayne, and newcomer Derrick Chen's 6-2, 6-2 triumph over BYU's Matheus Ferreira Leite.
Cal went 1-1 in doubles, with Hjorth and Michael Wright getting a win over Hawaii's Simao Telo Alves and Kilian Maitre, 8-3.

The second day of the Hawaii Invitational starts Friday with doubles at 2:30 p.m. HT followed by singles at approximately 3 p.m. HT.
