BOSTON – Graduate forward Sean Dhooghe scored his 32nd career goal late in the third period of Friday night's series opening matchup at Boston University. The sole goal for the Arizona State men's ice hockey team by Dhooghe was assisted by linemates Matthew Kopperud and Demetrios Koumontzis. The pair will meet again on Saturday, Jan. 8 at 5pm MST at Matthews Arena.
ASU (12-11-0) dropped the game to BU (8-9-3) with a final score of 1-7.
Both teams played a quiet first period that saw BU lead the shot chart, 14-9. Cole Brady collected 14 saves in his ninth start of the season.
BU came out hot of the gate - scoring at 1:49 in the second period. The Terriers then went to the dog house to start the second after a BU skater was called for hitting from behind. The penalty was issued as a five-minute major and misconduct, giving ASU its second power play opportunity of the game.
Halfway through the man-advantage, Demetrios Koumontzis went to the box for two minutes on a slashing call, forcing 4-on-4 play. BU ultimately killed the major penalty and enjoyed a momentum shift in its favor when Jack Judson was called for roughing. BU capitalized and scored its second goal of the game. Eight minutes later, the Terriers scored again to take the 3-0 lead to end the second period.
Sean Dhooghe scored off a tip in the crease on a shot by Matthew Kopperud at the top of the circle at the nine-minute mark. The assist pushed Kopperud to ASU's leading point scorer with 26 on the season.
