HONOLULU – Cal men's tennis finished unbeaten in singles for the second consecutive day to close out the Hawaii Invitational on Saturday at the UH Tennis Complex.
The Golden Bears did not lose a set in five singles wins, including in senior Yuta Kikuchi's 6-1, 6-1 win over Hawaii's Axel Labunie.
The Bears went 1-2 in doubles Saturday, with the 15th-ranked pair of Kikuchi and freshman Carl Emil Overbeck beating BYU's Wally Thayne and Zach Fuchs, 8-4.
"It's a great start to the season," said Kris Kwinta, in his first year as the Peter Wright Director of Men's Tennis. "The guys showed early signs of toughness and camaraderie. We played really well together, and it's great to know that the guys are ready to go and compete hard right from the start."
Cal starts dual-match play when it plays a pair of nonconference matches at Tulsa on Jan. 15 and at Tulane on Jan. 17.
