Cougars Conclude Play at Hawaii’s Weinman Foundation Invitational

HONOLULU – The Washington State Women's Tennis team battled in three three-set matches but could not capitalize during the final day of play at the 2022 Weinman Foundation Invitational Saturday at the UH Tennis Complex.
 
The tournament's format saw WSU, host Hawaii and No. 9 California compete in singles and doubles against each other.
 
In singles action, WSU freshman Elyse Tse battled Cal senior Julia Rosenqvist before falling 7-6, 4-6, 6-4 while WSU senior Savanna Ly-Nguyen pushed her opponent, Cal's Valentina Ivanov, to three sets in a 7-5, 1-6, 6-1 defeat. Cougar freshman Stefaniia Mikhailova also went the distance, pushing Hawaii's Nidhi Surapaneni to the limit in a 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 defeat.
 
Cougar freshman Maxine Murphy dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Cal's Katja Wiersholm while sophomore Fifa Kumhom fell by identical scores to Cal's Hannah Viller Moeller.
 
In doubles action, Yang Lee and Kumhom fell 8-6 to Villar Moeller and Wiersholm while Ly-Nguyen and Mikhailova dropped an 8-4 decision to Hawaii's Tal Talya Zandberg and Ana Vilcek. Cal's Hailey Giavara and Ivanov posted an 8-1 win over Tse and Murphy.
 
The Cougars are next in action Saturday when they travel to Spokane to face Gonzaga. Match time is set for Noon.
